This webinar will focus on creating a welcoming environment for members of the LGBTQ community. Presented by Lee Carpenter, an attorney whose practice includes a special emphasis on the unique needs of members of the LGBTQ community, participants will learn how to speak with LGBTQ individuals without causing offense, understand how LGBTQ life experiences and planning needs may differ, and identify ways to avoid unintentional bias. The many benefits of marriage will also be discussed in an estate-planning context. Participants will leave the session prepared to work with same-sex couples and other LGBTQ individuals with new understanding and confidence.

About the Presentor:
Lee Carpenter is a partner at the Baltimore law firm of Niles, Barton & Wilmer, LLP. His practice focuses on estate planning and probate, trust administration, and general business and corporate law. Lee’s estate-planning work includes a special emphasis on the unique needs of members of the LGBTQ community. As an active member of the community himself, he has testified before the Maryland General Assembly in favor of pro-LGBTQ legislation. Lee is a board member at the Baltimore Estate Planning Council and at FreeState Justice, which provides free legal services to Maryland’s low-income LGBTQ residents. In 2006 he received his J.D. from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, where he now teaches Estates & Trusts as an adjunct professor. He is a frequent author and lecturer on topics related to estate planning and LGBTQ law.
